The Floor Plan

Once we had decided on a Monolithic Dome, the next step was to decide on a floor plan. We visited the Monolithic Dome Institute web site and we purchased the book: Dome Living by David South with Freda Grones, but we did not find a floor plan that met our needs. We live in Canada and we wanted a dome with lots of windows facing South, for thermal gain, and a minimum number of windows facing north. So, my husband decided to design one himself. At first, he was thinking of a forty foot diameter dome with a second story for the bedrooms and a bathroom. He discussed this with Rob Phillips of Canadian Dome industries, the company that was going to build the dome for us, but Rob said to think about a larger dome, such as a fifty-five foot diameter one, and have everything on one floor. He said the cost would be cheaper and it would be easier to finish the inside. This sounded good because we were going to finish the inside ourselves. Also, this was going to be our retirement home and as we got older, we probably would not want our bedroom on the second floor. So, my husband returned to his computer and came up with the following floor plan based on a fifty-five foot diameter dome. It has two bedrooms, two baths, a utility room, a area for the batteries, washer an dryer, a large kitchen with a pass through to the utility room, a large open area that will be the dining and living area, and office. There was also a loft that was to be for storage.
